last night i met brooks and his friend laurie at empire skating in crown heights for "hip hop rollerskating" that laurie had read about in the village voice. it's a pretty shady neighborhood, but the place itself is apparently where "roller disco" was "invented". and the music was very disco-y. and everyone was AMAZING! apparently there's a rollerskating scene. these people were dancing. on. skates. it was unbelievable. and then i realized i hadn't been on 4-wheelers since i was 12 years old. i felt very conspicuous. but fun was had. i got better as time went on.

i just finished watching season 6 of buffy, and although i have big problems with some of the plotlines, i found myself liking it a lot more than i remembered. the shoddy production values only bothered me in 2 episodes. i still hated the riley episode. the willow plotline was still horribly handled, but there were some good moments. dawn was annoying but in some ways sympathetic. and xander and anya were so much more fun than i remembered! emma caulfield is hysterical.

i got siobhan settled in earlier, and then she went into a coma so i came home. she was a real trooper -- did really well. i think for a minute there she was really prepared to drive home when i kept stalling out. then we discovered i just hadn't taken off the emergency break. whoops. after that i made it back to her place stalling only once. but the i stalled twice after having to come to a complete stop to make the turn into her driveway. we finally made it though. siobhan was a little unsteady on her feet, especially going up the stairs, but she got into bed ok and i put on drop dead gorgeous. i ace-bandaged two ice packs to her head, but she sneezed them off and got jell-o all over them. hee.

i fell asleep for a while but of course didn't stay asleep. now i'm watching the best of phil hartman on saturday night live and eating flavorice. rock. in theory i should meet brooks tomorrow for the siren festival, but i really doubt that's going to happen. i think i'm just going to rest all day and then go to hayley's party at night. then sunday i might have lunch with nick amigone. we'll see.

my friend brooks is in joel klein's newest entertainment weekly column. for some reason, ew.com doesn't host the klein column, so here's the relevant bits transcribed by me:

Looking to turn my anger into action without actually getting up, I found savefrenchie.com, a site that has gotten people to send emails (5,000 so far) to the show's sponsors, demanding Frenchie's returns. I arranged a breakfast with the guy who started the site, Brooks King, a 23-year-old graphic designer and recent Brown graduate, who was in New york to protest against wwar with Iraq. No cause is too big or tee small for Brooks King.

Brooks, who has a shaved head and a tongue ring, was not allowed to watch much TV as a kid, which explains quite a lot, including the fact that he's applying to be n the next Survivor. "It's a double standard," he told me about the injustice of Frenchie. "There's a history of the black female body being hypersexualized and depicted as grotesque in its fertility." I gave Brooks a look. "I took a class on this," he admitted. Brooks' anger is so strong, he briefly considered not watching Idol anymore. "But, i like the show too much," he said. He has, however, fought the power by erasing the Paula Abdul MP3s from his design companyy's iTunes, where they had been in heavy rotation, particularly "Opposites Attract."

i don't know if it comes across how much brooks is simultaneously serious and taking the piss. i guess you have to know him, or else he might maybe sound like a pompous asshole. of course, i read it and thought it was hilarious. i mean, his elaborate non-wedding was in sunday styles of the NY Times and included him wearing a giant bear head. the absurdism is obvious. but why didn't he tell me he was trying to save frenchie?! or in new york for the rally? brooks, stop conquering print media and share the love!
