the new york magazine cover article this week is about the elite echelon of bloggers who rule the universe. well, maybe not the universe. just the web. anyway, boing boing is apparently the most linked-to blog on the web, so they refer to its creation in 2000 as a milestone in blogistory. what they leave out is that boing boing has been around much longer than that. i had a link to boing boing on my extremely bare bones geocities home page in 1996. and apparently, as far back as 1988, it was a paper zine.

but the same thing i thought about boing boing when it was just another boring website is true now that it's a scintillating blog -- it's filled with useless crap and is a total waste of time to read. there are inevitably real jewels in there, but as new york mag describes, they've got 5 bloggers just posting anything they can come up with for 12-14 hours a day. it's not as barebones and overwhelming as metafilter, but at least metafilter doesn't attempt hipness, really.

so, anyway, i'm always happy when someone finds something cool on boing boing and points me to it. that means they've done the work for me. because when i try to read the page myself, my eyes utterly glaze over.

segev has fallen asleep in front of the menus of the chappelle show season 2 DVD. so for about 45 minutes, my life has had the soundtrack of "what's the best show on tv? chappelle show! woo-hoo!" and lots of harmonica jams. but if i turn it down, or god forbid off, segev will wake up and be cranky.

and i don't remember if i posted this this morning or not, and i'm too lazy to go check. but segev and i are definitely getting married on september 2nd, the saturday of labor day weekend. wish us luck in planning this damn thing.

we got the best of the electric company in at the store today. john prepped it for me -- the sticker on the front says "cosby 4 maggie". ah, luis avalos, june angela -- why don't you get more work?

but really, who other than silent "e" could turn a cub into a cube?

dave eggers has an essay in the liner notes. no featurette with morgan freeman, though. just rita moreno.

i'm overstimulated right now. too many books i want to read and dvds i want to watch. people keep telling me to watch battlestar galactica, but if i start in on that now, i'll never work on my thesis.

oh, and i continue to impress people at work.

this version of alice in wonderland was my absolute favorite as a kid. now you can get a bootleg DVD copy of both parts. and for a pretty reasonable price, too!

when the midget shit himself--that's when i started laughing so hard i couldn't ring up customers anymore.

the headline on this story made me laugh out loud. i don'tlike "raw" as much as "delirious", at least partially because of his ridiculously misogynistic rant that contains that very quote. but delirious is tied for my favorite stand-up movie ever, alongside eddie izzard's "dress to kill". delirious is still not out on DVD. this is a crime.

the icon on this entry was chosen in honor of eddie murphy's deep-seated homophobia. and, you know, his dalliance with a transexual hooker. he was only giving him a ride home, people! and he doesn't have any intention of letting johnny gill rub him the right way, oh no!

beavis and butthead come to DVD on november 8th. they can't use entire episodes because of the impossibility of getting music rights for all the videos, so there will only be a couple of videos included on the disc. frankly, i'm only interested if they include the videos for babes in toyland's "bruise violet" (which they won't because it's where the whole beavis/fire controversy started), and "push th' little daisies" ("look, it's corky!"). those two videos crack me the fuck up. so, yeah, i won't be buying it no matter what, but it might be worth a rental depending what videos are on it.
phamos: (mario)
woo hoo! david cross is opening a bar on orchard street. yeah, fuck you, pianos! and a tinkle DVD? so many ways to waste money!
phamos: (mario)
SQUEEEEEEEEEEE!! pilots! UK scripts! specials! interviews! possible original openings!

and PILOTS! and, like i said, PILOTS!

some people have LOTR squee. i have muppet squee.

paramount is working on extras for season 2 of twin peaks, even though the set hasn't been officially announced yet. of course, this is after i spent about $25 on bootlegs of the spanish dvd release. oh well, they're pretty crappy quality and don't have the cover art and extras an official release would. plus, amazon's finally posted a release date for seasons 1 and 2 of newsradio (took them long enough). this means this year may offer twin peaks season 2, the muppet show season 1, fraggle rock season 1, newsradio 1 and 2, and (i hope) the state what a year that would be! i continue to keep my fingers crossed for sifl and ollie, which someone called to ask about at the store yesterday but you can only get bootleg. plus we've got angel season 5 in february, south park season 5 in march, and the sopranos season 5 probably in december. soap season 3 comes out next week, and that's my favorite season, but since i'm getting rid of my first two seasons because of disuse, i don't think i'll be buying it. even though it includes alien burt, jodie's adorable baby, and lots and lots of billy. there are also rumors about a daily show dvd coming out, although i have no idea how they'd manage to put a whole "season" of a four-times-weekly show on a disc. i guess it depends on what they're calling a season.
phamos: (honey)
aw, hell. i just realized i forgot to buy my stuff at work. crap. i'll get it tomorrow. i don't really need to obsessively watch season 5 of the simpsons. i'll find another way to amuse myself. like maybe obsessively watching old episodes of newsradio. until segev comes home and makes me stop, of course.

i got a lovely card from [livejournal.com profile] fastrada yesterday. it was very nice of you to include segev's name on the card.

my ipod played happy music on the way home. "bullet the blue sky", spoon, elastica, and cathy dennis. it made me think about how great bono's voice was back around joshua tree, and how much he's been coasting ever since. i know, i know, boo hiss, everyone loves bono, he's saving the world one jesse helms at a time. but...their last two albums have been just so...polished. no real emotion. even POP had more emotion. heh. i love pop. U2's always been more about the melody than the lyrics for me, but...i dunno, the lyrics are just getting cheesier and cheesier now. vertigo...i didn't know...slip your hand in my glove of love, whatever. and in 1987, he had eyeballs. now, who knows? i've said it before and i'll say it again. take off the sunglasses, bono. no. really. now. take them off. and get a haircut. he still looks like his "fly" character, but now it looks like a fly that got smashed on the windshield of a mack. and just for equal opportunity bashing, i will say that my old boyfriend larry mullen jr has a stupid haircut, too, and is looking pretty tatty. who would have guessed that adam clayton would age the best of all of them? (the edge still looks good. the edge is cool.)
phamos: (nerd)
ok, for all last-minute-buyers-of-presents-for maggie, i just discovered this, the holy grail of internet comedy: 100 strongbad emails on DV-fuckin-D! am i a HUGE nerd that i want this SO bad, but i know if i get it for myself segev will be disgusted because it's totally all available for free already? but it'd be, like, all of them...without clicking...and stuff. god, i'm lame.
phamos: (nerd)
i'm eating an apple and watching the star wars holiday special. so far it's made up almost entirely of incomprehensible wookie grunting. mark hamill is wearing a distracting amount of makeup.
phamos: (mario)
happy muppet news for me! the jim henson action figure pictured in my icon is finally actually going to be released! and word on the street is, fraggle rock season 1 box set next fall! i know this is interesting to no one but me. shove it.

Name a CD you own that no-one else on your friends list does: louisa morris-coming home to daisy (my cousin's CD). slightly more likely knowing the people on my friends list? the soundtrack to the last unicorn, an import from germany.

Name a book you own that no-one else on your friends list does: a lot of my poetry books. a signed copy of robert creeley's "gnomic verses". a bunch of old stuff of my dad's like...pocket poet books from city lights: a first edition of gregory corso's "gasoline" with an intro by allen ginsburg, a 1967 copy of howl with an intro by william carlos williams. a first edition of anne sexton's "live or die". a first edition of creeley's "for love". more first editions of ferlinghetti, gary snyder, william stafford. my dad had some really amazing books, but he got rid of most of them when we moved. some of them i managed to snag.

Name a movie you own on DVD/VHS/whatever that no-one else on your friends list does: probably the DVD set of elizabeth R, probably the brand new dvd of the first 3 eps of fraggle rock, because it's currently in only limited distribution and a pain in the ass to get. on VHS? cher fitness-a new attitude, my mom's old step workout tape.

Name a place that you have visited that no-one else on your friends list has: upper st. clair, pennsylvania.

dude, who knew that kindred: the embraced was out on DVD? i'm conflicted about whether i should put it on my wish list or not. i mean, i kinda want to see it again, but i don't think i need to OWN it. maybe i'll add it to my netflix queue.
phamos: (mario)
segev and i, just the other night, suddenly realized that seinfeld wasn't out on DVD.

as if by magic...
phamos: (we.are.as.gods)
i need more freaks and geeks now. i've exhausted the first disc, all the commentaries and special features. i am in love with jason segel. seth rogan and martin starr crack my shit up. little john daley grew up and became a funny, cute voice on the commentary track. linda cardellini is in scooby doo movies. i need more.
phamos: (regent)
i've ordered all of the freaks and geeks dvds from netflix. i never watched it, but rich always said it was really good. i just watched the first disc, and i'm hooked. sooo good. i'm actually kinda pissed that there were only 3 episodes on it. bill, the tall geeky geek, cracks me up. and i'm in love with the character of nick, who's so obviously smitten with lindsey. he's played by jason segel, who i think is quite tasty.

his career is going nowhere, but i look forward to watching the rest of the episodes to see if he ever gets any play.
phamos: (mario)
MOVIES:
-Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. segev doesn't want to see it; he
says it's a rental. i think he's out of his mind. must see now.
-Dawn of the Dead. sarah polley in a cheesy horror flick. that's a night out.

TV:
-Deadwood. mostly i just want to see what david milch uncensored is like.
-Newlyweds. i love jessica totally irrationally, but i was sad nick didn't get
his husky puppies.
-Newsradio. i have them all on tape. don't you wish you did?
-The Daily Show. always and forever. jon's been getting rowdy lately. and
am i the only one who finds rob corddry vaguely...sexy? in a similar vein,
don't even get me started on the superhottness that is steven colbert!

VIDEO:
-School of Rock. i never got to see it, and i can't find my blockbuster card!
argh! i've grown slightly tired of jables, though.
-The Last Unicorn. just out on dvd.

MUSIC:
-N.E.R.D., Fly or Die. is ?uestlove drumming on this album like he did on
the last? i *heart* ?uestlove. and pharrell, i'm slightly ashamed to say, is
my secret boyfriend.
-"Take Me Out," Franz Ferdinand. EVERYBODY was just all "franz
ferdinand, franz ferdinand." i downloaded it a while ago, and i finally
gave in and listened to it. and my toes won't stop tapping.
-"They," Jem. I've had this for a couple months now, but the jump-ropey-
type chant is just beyond catchy. all the other songs on her ep are junk,
though. here's hoping for the new album.
-Afghan Whigs, 1965. greg dulli may have the sexiest voice ever. sorry,
maynard.
-Death Cab for Cutie, Transatlanticism. i have gotten over my hatred for
their name and embraced the pretty.
-The Cure, Join the Dots. covet.

BOOKS:
-Dancing Barefoot, by Wil Wheaton. i really like his web page, and there's
good word of mouth on this book, which is only just out on amazon.
-Cremaster Cycles, Matthew Barney with essays by Nancy Spector. big and weird.
-Box Office Poison, by Alex Robinson. i ripped through this one and hated
when it ended.
-The Sandman: King of Dreams, by Alisa Kwitney. shiny. so so shiny.

anyone who owns a convertible in new york city is a nimrod. i hope that asshole in his beemer speeding down amsterdam gets his roof slashed.

whew! why am i so hostile tonight?

also, the extras on the alice in wonderland dvd are interesting, but mostly crap. although i did enjoy listening to the deleted songs. there was good reason for them to be deleted. pee yew.
