ok, that little black girl had to be a plant. who takes a kid to the state of the union address? no other kids in the whole room, but there's one right on the aisle where bush is going to be walking, so he can pick her up, and she just has to be black, right? and then they flash to her clapping again during the speech, having no idea what she's clapping for. that's shameless.

i lost it hard when they flashed to ted kennedy. it was right after bush took credit for giving prescription drugs to seniors, and they show teddy shaking his head and actually rolling his eyes. i cackled. segev told me to shut up. oh! and they just flashed to himn again. his face was all red, and he had his head in his hands and was shaking his head. and then they flashed to hilary, who was reluctantly clapping with this look on her face like she'd just swallowed something totally sour. hee! that's the best reason to watch this -- the reactions.

i also liked when a whole bunch of democrats clapped for the expiration of the patriot act. but then all the republicans outroared 'em when bush basically said that it should be renewed.

i think he just says nucular on purpose now, to sound "folksy". or else to fuel a thousand drinking games.

That gave me great glee, as well. I looked at my roommate, and joined in the applause myself.

I think the best thing about it, though, was how taken aback by the applause the Shrub was. The look on his face, I half expected him to have that half of the room summarily removed to a Free Speech Zone™.

My mother said that the man holding the girl is MLK Jr.'s son. So, I would assume the little girl is his daughter (and thusly MLK Jr.'s grandchild).

i lost it hard when they flashed to ted kennedy.

yes. I great enjoyed watching his facial expressions.

i was relieved that Our Fearless Leader mentioned "God" only (as I counted) 4 times in this speech. I was also amused when he mentioned how religious institutions with a "cross, star of David or a crescent" should be supported. Of course, the crescent symbol is used for Islam. however, it is also a Wiccan/pagan symbol....wonder if G.W. knew that. Somehow I can't imagine him supporting "occult" institutions.

as a result of the antibiotics i'm on, i was already physically ill before the speech began. i did become significantly more ill during the speech though. i blame Bush for that.

i wish there was some way for certain to find out about the little black girl. i saw the man holding her, and it didn't look to me like MLK's son, but maybe it was a different son that i didn't recognize. it seems odd to me, though, that MLK's son would be sitting at the state of the union the day after bush spoke at a MLK rally despite his simultaneous plan to destroy affermative action and appoint charles pickering despite the filibuster. i was under the impression that MLK's family was none too thrilled with the man, so why would he be making his daughter clap for political points that, i would assume, MLK III wouldn't agree with?

i really hope someone thanks him for his support of wiccan charities. witch outreach in impoverished communities! the pentagram community center!

According to this NYTimes article, the mystery lass was the daughter of Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr (D-IL). See? Bush IS a bipartisan leader.

I'll also note as a coda that this self-same representative endorsed Dean sometime in December. I'll further note that endorsements are useless bits of window-dressing anyhow, apparently.

You have impressive constitution for enduring an entire hourlong speech by Dubya. I just figured I'd skim the transcripts to catch up on the BS uttered; I honestly feel physical discomfort when I watch him speak for more than, say, 15 seconds. It's not even rabid partisanship so much as simple intolerance for his mannerisms and intonations. Gah.

How did Nancy and Daschle do on rebuttal? Daschle is a mealy-mouthed handwringer, I know, but I was surprised to see even Ms Pelosi (whom I rather like) being mocked by even moderate commentators for her over-the-top bearing and rhetoric. Man. We really need an official spokesperson who isn't a joke. It doesn't help that inconsequential loudmouths like Franken and Moore make it even worse for the left.

This is the only reason to watch the SOTU address. So that you can play Mystery Science Theater 3000 with it.

That's what the spouse and I usually do, although we were busy watching "America's Next Top Model" instead.

There was one other kid, a little boy who looked like he was age 10-12, in a suit next to his dad. He wasn't on the floor, though.

i also liked when a whole bunch of democrats clapped for the expiration of the patriot act.

Me too. They clapped for one or two other things that I can't remember right now... I ought to go read the transcript.

yeah, the other little boy popped up after i'd written the post.

i fully admit that the little girl was not a plant, but i still think it was shameless of them to cut to her clapping like that, like a deer in the headlights.

Oh, absolutely agreed. She couldn't have possibly known what it was she was clapping for.
