i've been watching a lot of roseanne lately. i'm finding myself increasingly identifying with roseanne, and all the pitfalls of adult life, and the fact that she suddenly become this GROWNUP and she doesn't know how the fuck it happened. there's one great line where roseanne asks jackie how old she feels, and jackie goes, "oh, i dunno, thirty...TWELVE, on a good day...SEVEN?" i like the show a lot better than i did as a kid because now i'm understanding where the parents are coming from. it's a weird paradigm shift.

i have also realized that sara gilbert was not that great an actress, nor were her kisses with johnny galecki PARTICULARLY convincing, but i don't care. my love for darlene continues unabated. the amount of sandman paraphernalia displayed on this show is astounding. i also noticed that, during the time right before becky runs off with mark, she has a couple of old REM posters on her wall -- there was definitely a Life's Rich Pageant one, and i think another one that i can't remember. so this was before REM really broke out, and i'm sitting here thinking "wow...becky was hip!" ebcause i'd totally always thought of her as this preppy little goody-two-shoes, the whole running-off-with-her-greaser-boyfriend thing notwithstanding. so i started to like becky, too. and, you know, of course, i ALWAYS thought john goodman was just the bees knees. so i'm pretty much down to only disliking DJ. and i doubt that will ever change.

If I'm remembering it correctly, the other poster was for "Fables of the Reconstruction." I remember it because I had the exact same poster in my room.

i think that they don't have knees, but they wish they did. in fact, they covet everyone else's knees. so when we say someone is the "bee's knees", we're saying they have a really desirable/enviable quality. yeah. or something. tee hee. ;^D

... basicallly, it started out meaning "something really really small and insignificant", and in slang form came to mean the exact opposite, "the epitome". some thought it was a derivative of "business", but it wasn't. nor was it a slurring of "the 'b's and 'e's (be-alls and end-alls).

etymology rocks.

hmmm... well, roseanne came out in '88. but document was released in september '87. so really, r.e.m. were already hitting before the show premiered, with the one i love (aug '87), and it's the end of the world as we know it (and i feel fine) (jan '88). i suppose one could argue that they hit even bigger with green in '89, and then with out of time in '91... and then automatic... in '92... but really, document started their more mainstream success. (dates provided are u.s. releases of albums and singles, but don't reflect the start of radioplay or charting.)

i think the roseanne show was capitalising on r.e.m.'s already booming success (certainly by the time becky was running off with mark). and becky wasn't as cool as they wanted us to think.

(don't mind me. i love r.e.m. and i always hated becky.)

darlene. all the way.

hey, i saw sara gilbert in some movie called light it up with judd nelson and... (i'm embarassed to say i recognised him) usher---night before last. she had pinkish red hair. it was a film about Evil and Social Injustice. as such, i propose it was a 1999 updating of hair, but they horribly failed.

i'm going back to bed now, honest. don't you wish i'd stayed there in the first place? ;)
