is it normal to get charged for INCOMING calls to your cell phone?!? we just got this enormous bill, and i think they're charging us for calls we've received. is this actually what normally happens?

depends on your provider. nextel doesn't charge for incoming calls, but as far as i know they're the only one. the only time i've ever heard of a provider not charging airtime - incoming or outgoing - is if you're making a 911 call.

let me clarify that - incoming calls WHERE YOU ANSWER THE PHONE. if you just let it ring and go to voicemail, they shouldn't be charging you for that.

depends on your plan. on my plan, i get charged for every minute that i'm using the phone, regardless of whether i made the call or i received it. i have a buttload of free minutes per month though, so i haven't gotten burned yet.

i did, however, get burned on the roaming charges from me checking my voice mail, when i was in nyc. OUCH!!!

About the only plans I've seen that don't charge for incoming minutes (aside from ulimited night/weekend minutes) were some fairly expensive plans on US Cellular.
