so, i read madeleine is sleeping in about 2 hours. i don't think it actually qualifies as a novel. it's made up of little sections, mostly a page long, but some a page and a half, some only one sentence. so it's kinda like little prose poems that create a story. yet i wasn't too into that story. the boundaries between the real world and the dream world were blurred, and in the end it turns out there's really no way to separate them -- that they may never have been separate in the first place, but rather the dream of someone else. maybe? i don't know. whatever. anyway, the "real life" story was boring and hard to follow, and the "dream" story was more interesting but not interesting enough to make me like the book. i think she's trying for magical-realism-meets-prose-poetry, but i don't think it was done particularly well. it was all very removed, dreamilike if you will, and that worked with the story but made me really bored. i didn't care what happened to a single one of these characters. so, i don't recommend it.

next up? the new terry pratchett book, going postal. yes, yes, i'm stepping down from my "literature" pedestal to read some comic fantasy. but at least i know i'll enjoy it. after that? probably the new philip roth book. i think it's called the plot against america, and it's a revisioning of his childhood as if lindbergh had been elected over roosevelt and we'd never gone into world war II. i've decided i really like philip roth.
