soothing the savage beats

i can't make a top ten albums list this year, because i only have 5 albums i'd recommend. in no particular order, those are faded seaside glamour by the delays, MM...food by MF doom, inches by les savy fav, antics by interpol, and from a basement on a hill by elliott smith. i also like the songs by the killers and le tigre i saw played live, but the albums themselves are too slick and, somehow, distant sounding for me to wholeheartedly recommend. biggest disappointment, for me? the new PJ harvey. the melodies are forgettable and the lyrics are so trite they hurt my teeth.

but here are some individual songs i liked.

BEST COVERS
"wonderwall" by ryan adams, "if you leave" by nada surf (both featured on the OC), and "common people" by william shatner. honestly, these three covers are my favorite songs of the year.

BEST CHEESY POP
"toxic" by britney spears (off an album released last year, but a single this year).

BEST RAP
"mosh" by eminem.

BEST 80s RIP-OFFS
"take me out" by franz ferdinand, "somebody told me" by the killers, "desperate guys" by the faint, "the death of american radio" by radio 4, "fearless" by the bravery, "cosmonaut" by the fatales.

BEST SWAN SONG
"coast to coast" by elliott smith.

BEST SONG OFF A CRAP ALBUM
"she wants to move" by N.E.R.D.

BEST ENNUI
"the sea and the rhythm" by iron and wine.

BEST ANNOYING
"sadie" by joanna newsom.

BEST OF NYC
"you're forever an hour glass" by benzos.

and...

TOP 5 SONGS I LISTENED TO THIS YEAR THAT ACTUALLY CAME OUT LAST YEAR
1. "fat city (slight return)" by the twilight singers
2. "too tough to die" by martina topley-bird
3. "trying to find a balance" by atmosphere
4. "floating" by sun kil moon
5. "the upper peninsula" by sufjan stevens

technically speaking, is 'common people' a cover? because I got the impression, reading the liner notes, that the song was actually written for the william shatner CD. am i wrong? is the world wrong? has everything turned upside down all at once?

it's totally a rad song, cover or uncover. (and 'toxic' is rad too, I admit; i'm with you there.)

it's a cover. the original is by pulp, came out in...'95, i think?

So, does Joanna Newsom's "Sadie" count as the most annoying song that you like or the most annoying song you almost like?

the most annoying song that i can't decide whether i like or not. it depends on my mood.

i watched the joanna newsome videos on bbc's collective site and i must say, i was charmed. i can see, however, how you'd be bit on the fence about what you think of her. i'd like to hear her speaking voice and see how it compares to her singing. i am intrigued by her, though, and would like to try out the disc. um, not that i have any money. ;)

and i'm daft. leave off that last "e" on her last name. doh.
