i have to say, the best supporting actress category is my favorite, as it features actresses who have done sterling work in such highbrow fare as "the mummy", "drop dead gorgeous", and "dawson't creek. not to mention francis mcdormand's turn in the phenomenally brilliant "something's gotta give" (i have my sarcasm hat on here, obviously -- that's one of the worst movies i've ever seen), and catherine keener's willingness to deflower 40 year old virgins. but i really like all 5 of those actresses, so i'm psyched for all of them.
i have not seen any of the nominated movies except for crash, which i hated. so here's a completely irrational reaction to the main categories. bold will win, italics are what i think SHOULD win.
Best Picture:
Brokeback Mountain
Capote
Crash
Good Night, and Good Luck.
Munich
(I'll admit, I have a little soft spot for Good Night and Good Luck, in principle--I'm really looking forward to seeing it on DVD. But Brokeback is unbeatable. Outside chance for Munich, but it really seems to not have lived up to people's expectations, and it got no acting nominations.)
Best Actor:
Philip Seymour Hoffman-Capote
Terrence Howard-Hustle & Flow
Heath Ledger-Brokeback Mountain
Joaquin Phoenix-Walk the Line
David Strathairn-Good Night and Good Luck
(I usually like Hoffman, but I pretty much hate Capote the person, so the idea of a dead-on impersonation of him leaves me shuddering. So annoying! And I've always crushed on Heath, ever since 40 things i hate about you...is it 40? i don't remember. 35? 17? whatever, he was super cute. and now he can apparently act, and he's engaged to michelle williams, and they have a baby, and yay heath! I think Terrence Howard is super talented, but they won't give him an award for playing a pimp. I hate Joaquin. David Strathairn still creeps me out from when he played AJ's guidance counselor that Carmela slept with on the Sopranos.)
Best Actress:
Judy Dench-Mrs. Henderson Presents
Felicity Huffman-Transamerica
Keira Knightly-Pride & Prejudice
Charlize Theron-North Country
Reese Witherspoon-Walk the Line
(A LOT of filler in this category. Felicity and Reese are the only ones to take seriously, and Felicity has a lot more momentum from the rest of the awards season. Plus, I'll vote for someone who had to come up with a character on their own as opposed to playing someone who already existed 9 times out of 10.)
Best Supporting Actor:
George Clooney-Syriana
Matt Dillon-Crash
Paul Giamatti-Cinderella Man
Jake Gyllenhaal-Brokeback Mountain
William Hurt-A History of Violence
(Giamatti will win, since he's been ridiculously overlooked in the past. I'm rooting for William Hurt for no apparent reason, except that the movie he's in was based on a graphic novel, and I still like him from when his penis was broken in the Big Chill. Even though he's apparently a giant asshole in real life.)
Best Supporting Actress
Amy Adams-Junebug
Catherine Keener-Capote
Frances McDormand-North Country
Rachel Weisz-The Constant Gardener
Michelle Williams-Brokeback Mountain
(I like everyone in this category, but Michelle Williams is just the cutest thing on two legs, and you can just tell how excited and surprised and honered she is that her career has gotten to this whole new place. I like everyone in this category, though, as I said before, and I'm rooting a tiny bit for a dark horse victory by Amy Adams, because she's on the Office.)
Best Director:
George Clooney-Good Night and Good Luck
Paul Haggis-Crash
Ang Lee-Brokeback Mountain
Bannett Miller-Capote
Steven Spielberg-Munich
(I think Ang Lee is overrated, but certainly not as overrated as fucking Spielberg. I hated Crash, and Capote, when it first came out, got mediocre reviews for everything but the acting. But if Clooney won, it would be super fun.)
oh, and crash will win for original screenplay (vomit), and brokeback will win adapted, with a very remote outside chance for history of violence, cuz they like to give the screenplay awards to movies that aren't actually gonna win best picture. because apparently something can be the best picture without a good screenplay or good actors...hi, peter jackson, how are you today?

Date: 2006-02-01 05:53 am (UTC)but i truly can't give a flying fuck about the oscars in particular, of all awards shows, since the winners are chosen by faggy hollywood guild-y schmucks and it's based much more on fashion than merit. yeah, fuck the oscars.

Date: 2006-02-01 08:23 pm (UTC)I didn't like Crash either. I didn't think it was terrible, but I did think it was too pretentious, too obvious, too precious; too too, you know?
But all this oscars stuff? Oscars schmoscars. They're making a sequel to The Dark Crystal. (Maybe you already knew, but just in case.)
