i figure some of you have little concept of where i work with respect to where the trade center was. this picture makes it pretty clear.
thanks, CNN! this almost makes up for the incredibly unsubstantiated reporting you brought to a panicked nation the first couple days after this happened! except not.
the top of the picture shows the point of manhattan -- that's Battery Park that starts where FDR Drive ends (fdr goes all the way up along the East River) and curves around the point over to the Hudson River. my building is the second one up along fdr drive from battery park -- right below and to the right of the heliport you can see sticking out into the east river.
if you look to the left of the heliport, the next dock over, and you see all those boats jutting off the dock? those are the barges that are being loaded with debris and taken off to Fresh Kills, an old landfill on Staten Island.
people here are speculating that the increased smokiness at work today is due to the fact that they knocked over the remaining part of the facade yesterday. but i think fires, in general, are still just burning. it smells like electrical fire. it's obnoxious to have no idea what's going on so nearby. they've also been dredging the east river right outside our building. we have tons of hypotheses on why the hell THAT's happening. but its mostly just fun to watch a big crane fill up a barge with river dirt. we call it the river-dirt-barge. we're awfully creative, aren't we?
