1) My current feeling about Jacob (even though this was not dealt with at all in the last episode) is that Jacob is Desmond, caught in one of his time-warpy dealies. My reasons? Well, they show a close-up of a freaked-out eye at one point in the Jacob scene, and I'm about 98% sure that it's Desmond's eye. Also, they put in that whole conversation at the monastery about how the wine was named after Moriah, which was where Abraham went to sacrifice Isaac. There's got to be some reason to put that crap in there. Maybe -- Jacob was Isaac's son, and stole Isaac's birthright from his brother...Desmond stole the island from Kelvin? Doesn't make any sense. But whatever. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. I don't really understand the Desmond time-travel specifics, so I can't explain HOW he came to be stuck in a time loop and advising the Others. But whatever.

2) Everyone's trying to figure out who's funeral it was. Many people have claimed that the name in the obituary starts with a "J" and ends with an "ntham". And someone completely brilliant on TWoP figured out that that corresponds nicely with Jeremy Betham. !!!!! You know how they love their philosopher names, and it's about time they brought out Bentham, with the panopticon and all. (I wrote a paper on Foucault's Discipline and Punish my first year of college, and it was the first thing I wrote about there that I found legitimately interesting.) I don't know who would be using Jeremy Bentham as an alias, or if it's someone we haven't met yet, but I'm willing to bet that's the name in the paper. And that's the first philosopher name that's made me stand up and cheer for it's awesomeness instead of just making me shake my head and go, "Sure. His last name is Hume. Of COURSE it is."

i think the coolest thing about jeremy bentham is the fact that his preserved body (with a wax model of his head) sits in a wooden closet at university college london. that's pretty rad.
