this makes me sick.

plus, there's this lovely tidbit:

To stem criticism that the measure protected fathers guilty of incest, Republicans joined Democrats in approving an amendment that says a parent who has committed incest and transports a minor out of state for an abortion will also face a fine and jail time.

so, okay, if the father rapes the girl and then tries to get her the abortion, then he goes to jail. shouldn't you just be putting the dad in jail because he raped his daughter in the first place? what the hell is the point of that amendment? WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THE 14 DEMOCRATS WHO VOTED FOR THIS BILL?

oh, and let's also gut sex education programs, because that's really a FAMILY matter. don't congresspeople realize that not every family is this leave-it-to-beaver picture of perfect happiness and tranquility that all these laws seem to presuppose? what sort of sex education are parents providing when they sodomize their kids? because THAT HAPPENS. you may not want to think about it, you might think it's distasteful, but it's true.

It was the lesser of two evils. If they vote against it, then they're sanctioning incest.

They can't win. And as someone who is constantly looking for fodder for political television ads, I appreciate that. :)

yeah, and what's amazing is that this comes during a week when the fda is considering making plan b available over the counter. wtf.

i'm completely disgusted as well. ugh.

I don't know if I ever mentioned this in my journal, but the last time I went to the gynecologist, she asked me if I wanted to have a prescription for Plan B just to have, in case. I thought that was super cool. She also is very big on holistic health, combining medical stuff with herbal remedies and meditation and yoga, but not in a totally hippy-dippy way. I really like her a lot.

that is awesome! i'd like to find a doc like that here.

planned parenthood was really nice to me when i went in a few months ago for plan b. but even with a student discount, it ended up being $40-50 for the visit and pills. i'm really hoping that the FDA allows it to be sold OTC and that there's a subsequent price drop after that. we'll see how it goes over here in cincinnati, given that the city is largely catholic. blah.

Yeah, I haven't actually filled the prescription yet, but the school has a special deal where if you fill it at a certain pharmacy you get it super cheap. They do the same thing with regular birth control pills, but only for a few selected brands. Actually, that's the pharmacy I like best in the neighborhood anyway -- they're cheaper than Rite Aid, and not as spastically incompetent as Duane Reade. Over the past few years I have become something of a connoisseur of pharmacies. Pharmacies, Disney movies, cherry-flavored frozen beverages, TV on DVD, neoconservatives -- those are my Jeopardy categories. Are there five categories or six categories on a Jeopardy board? Let's throw in Doonesbury comic strips as my sixth category. So much useless knowledge! (I know I'm rambling.)

everything has to have their area of knowledge. knowledge of good pharmacies is helpful! :)
