OK, OK, Oscars, yeah, great. But can we talk about what happened on The Wire tonight? KENARD? That is some BULLshit right there.

I read on TWOP (so you have probably read this already) but the very first time we are introduced to Kenard in season 3, it's right after the shootout in which a couple of bystanders are shot and he's the kid running around pretending to be Omar.

The event to which you refer was terribly sad, but you could tell the episode was going that direction. I'm glad they did it early rather than at the end.

That kid has got to get got.

The whole scene was making me uneasy, but I didn't quite identify it for what it was until it happened. When Kenard was pouring lighter fluid on the cat, I was SO worried that they were going to show something that I just didn't have the stomach to take, and I THOUGHT it was Kenard but I wasn't sure and didn't think it was that important. And then when Omar was shouting in the street, I was like, "Jesus, this is hard to watch -- he looks so beaten down. Where is this going?" And then, boom.

A lot of people were disappointed with how he went out, but it needed to happen like this. Some big gun battle, or Omar actually getting Marlo -- it would kinda ruin the point of the show. I think the reason so many people thought it would end like that is that this season has been so over-the-top compared to the subtlety of earlier seasons, that maybe Simon had lost it. Nope. And the Kenard "I wanna be Omar" callback was awesome. Good catch on whoever figured that one out.

I have never seen a kid pour lighter fluid on a cat, but that right there is some shameful shit, and probably disturbed me even more than the eventual denoument. Just an unsettling sequence, all told. Poor guy.

I have to admit I was hoping for some big gun battle, but it probably would have been more disappointing than this in terms of the big picture and the realism that the Wire is noted for.

Speaking of realism -- have you noticed how many "civilian" actors there are? It's like somehow the Wire has become one of the worst-acted shows on TV just by virtue of having nonactors play so many parts. I mean, they do OK, I guess, but.... I'm not sure their casting is altogether a net positive for the show.

I've just thought the whole season has been one big game of "Hey It's That Guy" only with actors from previous seasons. Hey, it's Nick Sobotka! Hey, it's Johnny Fifty! Hey, it's Mayor Royce! Hey, it's Sergei! Hey, it's Avon! Everyone just shows up for one episode, says their one line, and everything is wrapped up all neat and tidy. Don't even get me started on the questionable wisdom behind the Belzer cameo.

At this point, I kinda just want to get out of the season with Bunk and Bubbles still alive and Dukie not a junkie. Do you think we can accomplish that? Because I have about zero hope for everyone else.

"Hey It's That Guy" has been my favorite part of this season. I cheered when Nick Sobotka showed up; I cheered to see Richard Belzer / Munch; I didn't quite cheer, but was amused, to see Poot last night.

I, completely unspoiled, feel pretty confident that Bubbles will turn out OK, that Dukie will turn out OK, but that when McNulty goes down, somehow Bunk will get caught up in it too and get screwed somehow. I guess that otherwise, I, like you, don't have a lot of hope; but I do think that Kima will be alright, and actually Carcetti will probably also be fine. And so will Carver.

Really, he's hot? Wow. I never would have thought of him as 'fine.' Hmm. Did you see him on Oz? he had a role on it for a while in the middle of its run. Totally annoying character. Like Carver was annoying in the first few seasons too.

Yeah, Carver was super annoying early on, but then he got awesome. But hot throughout. I dunno how good my judgment is, though -- I think pretty much everyone on that show is hot who isn't Herc or Colicchio. I can't even speak when Daniels takes his shirt off. Jesus Christ. The man is like a medical anatomical model.

I haven't ever watched Oz. It's kinda on my list, but I never get around to it.

Judge Phelan is hot? (I kid -- I was thinking about it, and yeah, almost every guy on that show could be considered hot, even the annoying ones like Herc. It's like the only exceptions are Phelan and Levy and... one or two of the newspaper people?)

Oz is OK -- I mean, the first episode is rather weak but the first and second seasons are actually really good, then the series really tails off, but not before some great performances from Adewale Ade-what's-his-name who played Eko on Lost. Lots of hot guys, from what I hear; hot guys who all get fully naked at some point, and have sex. So, you know, if you're into that sort of thing...
