desert sessions vol. 9 & 10. josh homme: man of a thousand side projects. josh homme: the only man on earth who could get me to consider buying a death metal album, something not even dave grohl's probot could do. (i am, however, perversely drawn in by the pink and baby blue color schewe with the ASL hands...) josh homme: the only man who could get into a bar fight at manitoba's and still be cool. (i went to manitoba's once. i sat in the corner and played with one of those pens where if you turn it upside down, the girl's clothes come off.) josh homme: the only man who could rock that silly ducktail and still earn my love. go on with your craig-kilborn-lookin' bad self, josh homme!

"trying to find a balance," atmosphere. the perfect song to listen to late at night while pacing restlessly in the delancy subway station.

"between us and them," moving units. *bounce* *bounce* *bounce*

"how we do," mount sims. listen to this once and then try to get it out of your head. i dare you. the chorus will haunt you unto the end of days. and lo, as the horsemen of the apocalypse advance upon you, as the streets run with blood, in the back corner of your mind, you will hear, "ah, you know how we do, you know how we do, this is how we do." for all the girls who do rock kangaroos and comb their hair like it's 1982.

"dirt off your shoulder," jay z. ladies is pimps, too. daaaaamn right. i have a tendency to compulsively brush shit off my shirt. those of us with scalp conditions finally have an anthem!

"too tough to die," martina topley-bird. greg dulli does a cover of this in concert. it is dulli-worthy.

siobhan can't go clubbing with me, so i'm going to try and go it alone. here's the places i'll be hitting, with the TONY descriptions.

broadcast, bar 13, 35 E. 13th street btwn broadway and university, 10 pm, free. motherfucker's alluring michael t., dj jess from trash!, and guests (tonight, ultragrrrl) transmit the sounds of rock, new wave, postpunk and '80s pop from the turntables directly to your tympana at this little dance club. upstairs, dan selzer and mike simonetti do the damage with punk and old-school material. this edition, amazingly, marks a full five years of broadcast freak-out fun. open bar from 10 to midnight, smoking patio on roof.

distortions, rififi, 332 e. 11th street btwn first and second aves, 11 pm, free. matt pinfield (yes, the erstwhile MTV dude...) returns to the decks tonight at east village bar rififi for an indie-rock/shoegazer/brit-beat bonanza. he'll be joined on the wheels of steel by dj hill.

before i go out, though, i'm going to be watching frontline on PBS to see "the way the music died," an expose on the modern recording industry. even those outside of new york can watch this on their local PBS affiliate.
