Thanks, Darrien. I think a lot of the confusion stems from my own lack of focus when writing it. The topic was just SO broad and SO vague (basically "write 1000 words on a specific violation of human rights. go!") that i didn't know quite how to tread the line between thesis-driven paper and journalistic essay. so i think those three different perspectives you've pointed out are really just me covering my own ass. :) point very much taken; it's something i'll try to clarify in editing.
(Also, I think my personal bias against any kind of fundamentalism is showing through my attempts to present the argument in a purely rights-driven critique.)
