She's his LOBSTER!

An episode full of Desmond, Sayid, Corporal Pansy, Hanso mysteries and time-travelly goodness? Now THAT's more like it.

I still don't know what the crap is going on, but I am more convinced than ever that the eye in Jacob's cabin is Desmond in some crazy time loop. The emphasis on the doctor (if that was actually a doctor...where have I seen that actor before? (eta: ahhhh...creepy Wolfram & Hart doctor that jacked up Gunn's brain and got him to bring the Illyria box that killed Fred...MAYBE WOLFRAM & HART IS BEHIND THE DHARMA FOUNDATION! JOSSVERSE/LOSTVERSE CROSSOVER! HOLLA!) looking in his eyes to diagnose him sealed the deal for me. Don't know how, don't know why. But I am strangely sure -- Desmond has something to do with Jacob. I'm not saying he IS Jacob -- but he's in that cabin. I was apparently wrong about the boat being further in the future, though -- the 2004 calendar and Penny's expectant Christmas phone call would put the lie to my speculation that Frank and Jack were talking about different Red Sox wins.

I absolutely adore Jeremy Davies. I always have, but he's just killing in this part. It's the part he was born to play -- brilliant, twitchy, and completely endearing. Juliet's also strangely kickass this season; I like her a lot more than I did last year. Sorry to see Fisher Stevens go so quickly. Boy, he is an unsettling-looking man.

I'm not sure if Desmond finding his "constant" at the end just meant that he wasn't going to have an aneurysm and kick it like Jahrvi and the rat, or if he was totally re-moored and remembered the island. I was confused because he seemed to have a look of recognition when Penny mentioned Charlie, and of course he said Sayid's name -- but Sayid had been saying it throughout the episode, so I wasn't positive that it was supposed to acknowledge memory. But at least now we know why Faraday "didn't know" why he was so upset by the footage of the plane crash. Well, not exactly why -- but it obviously has to do with the same exposure to electromagnetism. Whether that's prolonged over time (the "what do you wear on your head" comment) or we'll see some other major event...not sure. Is he going to be less twitchy now that he's found his constant? Why hadn't he read that page in his book before -- or has he? Did he make a point of knowing Desmond's name two episodes ago? I should rewatch that one and this one together.

Where was Zoe Bell on the ship?? I was expecting some sort of Kiwi stuntwoman fantasticness! That's probably the only thing that would have made this episode any better. Well, that and some sort of Sawyer sexytime and the return of immortal pirate Batmanuel. I love this show.

I am expecting comments from AT LEAST Mike and Maggie and John and Mimi. Go.

At LEAST John.

I always have some trouble with time travel, because I find myself getting bogged down in details (my inner nerd; though time travel is of course cool as hell and an obvious part of Lost). I'll be curious to see how Abrams et al handles it.

I'm pretty sure that Desmond returned to 2004 intact; I just remember hearing enough details in his conversation with Penny that he seemed to have recollected all of his present-day memories. And since he's stopped his little quantum leaps in the present and told Sayyid he feels "perfect," I think he's anchored with the island, etc.

So are we to believe that the doctor is Ben's spy? I think it might be the unseen Captain of the boat; I mean, who else could have given the order to not ever respond to Penny's transmissions, and who else would have motivation to do so?

Also: it seems like the boat people are looking for Ben and Desmond; Naomi had the Desmond/Penny picture, which leads me to believe that at least Faraday had knowledge of Desmond's special-ness, and wanted to have a look at him. Or, as you suggest, he knew that Desmond was going to be his constant all along. Again, the trouble with time travel is keeping knowledge acquired during the various time periods congruous.

That's all I've got. And, because I'm a tool on Tivo autopilot, I reflexively deleted the episode and have to rely on my sleepy memories.

I think that "Ben's man" on the boat is either the unseen captain or Michael, given that Harold Perrineau has been in the credits for 5 episodes now and has yet to show up. I'm assuming we'll see him soon,so I'm also assuming he'll be on the boat. Unless Michael IS the captain, which would be awesome, but seems unlikely given the timeline.

Oooh, good eye on recognizing the doctor! It would be sweet if Kate turned blue and learned kung-fu and got all angsty and pronounced offal wrong.

It was a really fun episode but: I find Jeremy Davies to be overtwitchy to my tastes. It's a little too exaggerated for me. And as for you liking Juliet this season -- she's hardly had anything to do! I've been on the Juliet train since she first arrived on the scene.

I think you're probably right about some sort of Desmond-Jacob connection -- I have thought that the mysterious eye in the cabin looked a little like Desmond's -- and I, like you, think it's gotta be the captain of the boat who is Ben's man, and I think it's gotta be Michael, even though that doesn't make any sense, unless maybe Michael has been doing a little time-traveling himself?

Did we know Penny's dad was a collector of island-related artifacts? I feel like that's something that was mentioned before (maybe in some LOST EXPERIENCE bullshit) but I was a little shocked to see him bidding on the Black Rock journal.

Anyway, this show has been on a roll (except for last week).

Oh yeah -- is it just me, or does Desmond look 100X better w/ island beard?

Ah, don't give me credit for the doctor catch -- I looked him up on IMDB. And I guess I only like Juliet in small doses...either that or she's cut back noticeably on her botox shots, so her face actually makes expressions now.

I don't remember any specifics about Widmore collecting island stuff, but I was pretty psyched about that scene -- finally they're starting to tie the mythology and the bureaucracy into the actual show instead of making us hunt around various dopey websites for secret messages.

Desmond does indeed look better with the beard -- but I think it's also his sexy tousled hair that makes the difference. And I'm not even a long-hair-lover -- he's just got a REALLY nice head of hair, so it's even more noticeable when they stick him in a dopey wig. Seriously, Lost needs to up its wig budget. Last night's wasn't so bad, but Jack, Kate, and Sayid have all sported some RIDCULOUS fake hair in the past. (Desmond also had really bad hair in the monastery episode.) You're telling me that on a show that successful, you can't get a more convincing fake beard than the one Jack had in the finale last year? That's just sad.

Jack's flashforward beard was a thing of beauty. It was fantastic!

Alias was so good with wigs -- is JJ keeping the name of his wigmaker secret for some reason?

I don't know about that one. I have to rewatch it today. We had to watch it late and quietly since Kris' uncle was sleeping in the next room and had to get up at 6am to catch a plane after having just arrived from Spain. So...not the ideal way to watch. I REALLY don't want time travel to be the answer to everything on LOST. I hope that is not what the whole show is about, because it makes my head hurt too, mainly from trying to figure everything out. I have never been a big time travel fan. Those details drive me nuts! But, the episode was certainly interesting, as opposed to last week's snooze fest, and I do love Desmond and HOPE he is back to himself or that is going to get really annoying, really quickly! I think I missed the island. I LOVE the weirdness about the time difference between the island and everywhere else and I love that Daniel actually TOLD the losties something and did not let annoying red head girl, who I hope gets killed off soon, make him shut up. I LOVED the black rock thing and desperately wanted to go break the glass around that journal and read it and I LOVED seeing Bradford Meade. I love Penny too. So there were plenty of things to love, my head just got tangled around the time travel. Desmond has really nice hair, long or short. It really looked like they cut it. Not a lame wig like Claire's ugly thing she has been traipsing around in. I missed Sawyer and Kate and Hurley and crazy, beat up Ben. But I kind of hope Kate is somewhere in the jungle trapped in a ditch thinking about how rude she was to Sawyer and how she will make it up to him and treat him better since he is really making an effort and she has been nothing but unkind to him! The boat creeped me out and all those new people are SOOO untrustworthy. That was a SUPER quick turn for Fisher Stevens. What? And if Michael does not show up soon I am going to get really irritated since it is really not a big "reveal" since they announced it at comiccon 7 months ago and put his name in the credits. It is like the biggest tease ever! MIIIICHAEEEEEEELL! Wow, that is all for now....xo Sweester

I LOVED last night's episode. I think I almost cried when they FINALLY really acknowledged the time weirdness on the island. they finally said "hi! wtf?" to that giant white elephant in the living room. And I loved/hated how Jack was all "time difference between here and the island? whatcha you talkin' 'bout?" I hope Jack gets unstuck in time and his brain drips out his nose but I'm guessing that's unlikely.

Anyhoo, I am really glad that they now have FaradayManson. Yeah, I think Desmond has a good point when he mentioned to FaradayManson how perhaps he should wear some sort of head protection when exposing himself to all that radiation. As others have pointed out, I am guessing this is why Faraday later ends up with a caretaker.

I think we are also beginning to see the reasons why Desmond was kicked out/court-martialed of the army. The army does not like having crazy seemingly-delusional people in its ranks. I am guessing disturbed unstuck Desmond may end up doing something that violates the military code in an effort to contact Penny or something else Island-related.

Re: Penny and Desmond lovey-dovey phone call. Having read a lot of the Lost blogs before writing this, I've seen that many people were very touched (even to tears) by the romance of this phone call. I was somewhat touched but the whole scene quickly devolved into the Daniel Day-Lewis/Madeline Stowe "Whatever may occur, I will find you!" scene from Last of the Mohicans and so I was sitting there watching the Desmond/Penny scene with that whiny Clannad song stuck in my head. Yes, they do have an epic love and it's clearly important to the storyline. I think I am probably somewhat jealous of Penny since she is dating my hottie Scottish boyfriend. Also, Penny is such a bitchy narcissist on Tell Me You Love Me that it's hard to like her now.

I think The Constant episode goes down as one of the best Lost episodes so far. I didn't want the episode to end. They are going to have trouble topping themselves after this episode. I wonder what next week's episode will reveal about Juliet.

And, of course, as always...Sayid is THE MAN.

I'm not sure if Desmond finding his "constant" at the end just meant that he wasn't going to have an aneurysm and kick it like Jahrvi and the rat, or if he was totally re-moored and remembered the island.

Totally re-moored. Until his next time-traveling adventure.

Well, not exactly why -- but it obviously has to do with the same exposure to electromagnetism. Whether that's prolonged over time (the "what do you wear on your head" comment)

It's the island + electromagnetism or radiation. I think the doc was exposed to radiation, and Desmond was obviously in the hatch with the electromagnetic assplosion.

Is he going to be less twitchy now that he's found his constant? Why hadn't he read that page in his book before -- or has he?

Last ep, they had him trying to remember 3 playing cards, and he couldn't even do that. I think the point is that his time experiments have frakked up his mind, and his journal is now his bible. Presumably he's not completely unhinged as yet (since it seemed like a pretty dramatic transition for Desmond), but probably will be when he tries to leave?

(Cue a later scene where someone wants to kill Desmond for his connection to Penny, and the doctor saves him because he needs him to stay alive.)

Something they touched upon but didn't follow up on was why Penny's dad always treats Desmond like crap. Penny's dad said it wasn't his objection (although, at this point in the timeline, he'd said Desmond wasn't worth a drink of his scotch, let alone his daughter, and that's what had caused Desmond to run off to the army), and told Des to ask Penny whose objection it was, which he didn't do.

I think we're going to find out that Penny is way more involved in things than we've previously seen.

I think the writers really like writing for Desmond. They seem to do their best work when he's the central character, or at least they seem to have more fun. They still do pretty well with Sayid's episodes. Hurley's okay in support, but his episode this season wasn't as good as his eps in previous seasons; I hope they figure out something better to do with him in the future.

Kate's and Jack's episodes seem to have the stench of obligation about them. They're not as much fun to write about as they probably were in the first season, we know so much about them already, and they're really kind of ordinary. I bet (not money--too broke for that) the main reason they're still alive is because of the network's marketing department.

I've been convinced that Michael's on the boat since Ben mentioned that he's got someone on it. Ben's another character the writers seem to like (from a writing perspective).

I love the character of Faraday--he's somehow simultaneously compelling and a bit repulsive (in the sense of 'tending to drive away').
